Microsoft is proving itself just full of surprises this year, under the leadership of new chief executive officer Satya Nadella. The latest about-face the company has made is great news for students and average customers: Microsoft Office is now free on iPhone and iPad. A version for Android tablets is on its way, and will also be free.
Previously, you could read documents on the free iOS apps, but to edit and print them, you had to subscribe to Office 365. Now, the entire apps are available, with no subscription necessary. This move will help the suite of productivity apps compete against the similar free offerings from Apple and Google.
“We’d like to dramatically increase the number of people trying Office,” said John Case, corporate vice president of Office marketing at Microsoft. “This is about widening the funnel.”
