Microsoft is now saying that Windows 10 will be the last version of Windows. That probably doesn’t mean what you think it means, however.
Windows 10 will still get updates, probably for many many years to come. But those updates will be more incremental than they’ve been in the past. There won’t be big wiping-the-slate-clean versions of the operating like there have been in the past.
Which means instead of launching a Windows 11 at some point, Windows 10 will gradually morph into Windows 11 and 12 and 13, etc. It just won’t be accompanied by a number.
Or so they say. It’s a new approach to the software, and it will be interesting to see if Microsoft keeps it up for 10 or 20 years. Or until we’re strapped into HoloLens all day and not using what we now consider PCs.
